President Ramaphosa to address nation on illegal migration protests

The address comes amid growing public debate over immigration, service delivery challenges, crime concerns, and tensions in several communities where demonstrations have called for stronger action against undocumented foreign nationals.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on Sunday evening (June 7) regarding the government’s response to illegal migration and the recent increase in protests targeting foreign nationals across parts of South Africa.

The address comes amid growing public debate over immigration, service delivery challenges, crime concerns, and tensions in several communities where demonstrations have called for stronger action against undocumented foreign nationals.

According to the Presidency, Ramaphosa will outline the government’s approach to managing illegal migration while addressing concerns raised by communities and reaffirming the country’s commitment to the rule of law.

The national address will take place from the Union Buildings in Pretoria at pm, broadcast live on SABC platforms, while the Presidency will also stream the proceedings on its official digital channels.

Government is expected to provide clarity on measures being implemented to strengthen border management, improve immigration processes, and deal with the social and economic issues that have contributed to tensions in some communities.

The President’s address follows a series of protests in various parts of the country where residents have demanded stricter enforcement of immigration laws.

Human rights organisations and community leaders have meanwhile called for peaceful engagement and warned against acts of violence or xenophobia.

Further details on government’s plans and policy direction are expected to emerge during the President’s address.
