SASSA explains how to apply for social grants online

SASSA says its online services form part of ongoing efforts to improve access to social grants and ensure that the right grant reaches the right person at the right time and place.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is encouraging beneficiaries to make use of its online services platform to apply for social grants from the comfort of their homes.

The online application system allows qualifying South Africans to apply for various social grants without having to visit a SASSA office, helping to reduce queues and save time.

According to information provided by SASSA, applicants can access the online services portal through any internet-enabled device by visiting the SASSA Online Services website.

How the online application process works

To begin the process, applicants must first register on the SASSA Online Services platform by providing their personal details. Once registration is completed, a One-Time Pin (OTP) will be sent to their mobile phone to verify their account.

After entering the OTP and completing the registration process, users can log into the system and access the available SASSA services.Applicants can then select the option “Apply for a Grant” and choose the specific grant they wish to apply for.

SASSA uses an Older Personโ€™s Grant application as an example in its guide, but the process applies to other grants available on the platform.

The system will require applicants to complete a screening questionnaire and provide information that matches their official identity documents. SASSA has urged applicants to answer all questions honestly, warning that false information could delay an application or result in legal consequences.

Uploading supporting documents

Once the application form has been completed, applicants will be required to provide supporting information and complete a SASSA-generated affidavit.

The online system will then direct users to upload all required supporting documents.

Applicants can also obtain and print documents such as the SASSA-generated affidavit and consent forms through the online platform.

SASSA notes that some supporting documents may need to be certified before being uploaded and that all documents must be submitted in an acceptable format.

The website will indicate which documents have been successfully uploaded and identify any outstanding documents still required before the application can be processed.Final submission and confirmationAfter all supporting documents have been uploaded, applicants must click the “Submit Documents” button to complete the process.

Successful submissions will generate both an SMS and email confirmation containing a reference number that can be used for future enquiries and tracking the application.

SASSA said the official application date will be the date on which all required supporting documents have been received by the agency.

Citizens who need assistance can contact SASSA’s toll-free number on 0800 60 10 11 or visit the agency’s official website at www.sassa.gov.za for more information.
