The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of a Public Order Policing (POP) officer and a civilian who were shot and killed in Tsakane on Monday night, 1 June 2026.
According to SAPS, the off-duty police officer was at a local supermarket when he was allegedly attacked by three unidentified suspects. The suspects reportedly opened fire, fatally wounding the officer.
Police said the suspects then moved to a nearby street, where they allegedly shot and killed another victim who was inside a vehicle.
The circumstances surrounding the shootings remain unclear, and the motive for the attacks has not yet been established.
Lieutenant General Mthombeni conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved families and all those affected by the tragic incident.
Police have launched an investigation and are working to determine what led to the killings. No arrests had been reported at the time of publication.
Law enforcement has appealed to anyone with information that may assist the investigation to come forward and assist law enforcement in bringing those responsible to justice.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about violent crime in the province, where police continue efforts to combat serious and violent offences across communities.
