More than 120 homeless people in Johannesburgโ€™s inner city received essential supplies during an outreach initiative led by the Lightshedding Africa Foundation in partnership with the Greater Soweto Bikers (GSB).

The initiative took place on Friday, June 20, with volunteers gathering at Gandhi Square before travelling to several areas across the inner city to distribute aid to vulnerable residents.

People living along Bree Street, De Villiers Street and near Nelson Mandela Bridge Park received warm blankets, soup, fresh bread, clothing and shoes.

The outreach was aimed at providing immediate relief during the winter season while also promoting dignity, compassion and support for people facing homelessness.

Khanyisile Madlala of the Lightshedding Africa Foundation thanked the organisations, supporters and sponsors who made the programme possible.

โ€œWe are incredibly grateful to our partners and sponsors for a job well done,โ€ said Madlala.

โ€œOur mission is to restore love, compassion and dignity to the people of South Africa, and today we saw that mission come to life. We thank the Greater Soweto Bikers for their incredible support and everyone who contributed to making today a success.โ€

Members of the Greater Soweto Bikers joined the foundationโ€™s team in delivering the donated items, demonstrating the role that community organisations can play in responding to social challenges in Johannesburg.

The Lightshedding Africa Foundation said the project forms part of its broader commitment to support marginalised communities across South Africa through humanitarian outreach, the distribution of essential goods and partnerships with community stakeholders.

The organisation also focuses on skills development and empowerment programmes, particularly for women and children, as part of its long-term goal of building stronger and more self-reliant communities.

The foundation said it will continue working with partners and supporters to reach vulnerable people in communities across the country.
