South Africans Called to Register Ahead of Local Government Elections

With the election date confirmed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Commission is now placing strong emphasis on the upcoming national voter registration weekend, set for 20 and 21 June 2026.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa has intensified its call for eligible citizens to register to vote, as the country prepares for the upcoming Local Government Elections scheduled for 4 November 2026.

With the election date confirmed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Commission is now placing strong emphasis on the upcoming national voter registration weekend, set for 20 and 21 June 2026.

The IEC says this weekend presents a crucial opportunity for South Africans—especially first-time voters and those who have recently relocated—to ensure they are properly registered in the correct voting district.

Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo has encouraged citizens not to delay the process, stressing that voter registration is a key step in participating in the country’s democracy.

Only registered voters will be allowed to cast their ballots on election day, and they must do so at the specific voting station where they are registered.

During the registration weekend, voting stations across the country will open their doors to assist citizens with new registrations and updates to existing voter details. This in-person option is particularly important for those who may not have access to digital platforms or require assistance with the process.

The Commission has also made it easier for citizens to register online through its official website, allowing users to check or update their details from their mobile phones or computers.

However, the IEC is urging the public not to wait until the last minute. Once the elections are formally proclaimed by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the voters’ roll will close—meaning no further registrations or changes will be allowed.

The Commission emphasised that local government elections have a direct impact on communities, influencing decisions around service delivery, infrastructure, housing, and local economic development.

By registering and voting, citizens play an active role in shaping the future of their municipalities.

As the countdown to 4 November begins, the IEC is calling on all eligible South Africans to take responsibility and make their voices heard.

“Register now, verify your details, and be ready to vote,” the Commission urged, reinforcing the importance of full participation in building a stronger and more inclusive democracy.
