The Department of Education has confirmed that Monday, 15 June 2026, will be observed as a special school holiday for all public schools across South Africa, ahead of the official Youth Day public holiday on Tuesday, 16 June 2026.
The additional day off will provide learners, educators and school communities with an opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of the youth of 1976, whose bravery and sacrifice played a significant role in the struggle for quality education and freedom in South Africa.
In a statement, the Department encouraged learners to use the period meaningfully by reflecting on the progress made in expanding access to education and by recommitting themselves to academic excellence, active citizenship and helping to build a prosperous future for the country.
Mpumalanga MEC for Education, Lindi Masina, said the occasion serves as a reminder of the important role young people play in shaping the nation.
“The youth of today are architects of South Africaโs future,” said Masina.
Youth Day is commemorated annually on 16 June in honour of the thousands of students who participated in the 1976 Soweto uprising, demanding equal and quality education. The day remains an important reminder of the contribution made by young people in the country’s democratic journey.
Learners are expected to return to school on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.
