An off-duty Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, June 30, after she allegedly shot and killed a fellow JMPD officer during an incident in Glenridge Extension 16, Soweto.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that it is investigating the fatal shooting, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 28 June 2026.
According to IPID, the accused officer is being held at the Moroka Police Station holding cells pending her first court appearance.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was attending an event at a club in Soweto when she allegedly became involved in an argument with her girlfriend. The accused reportedly contacted her colleague, who later became the victim, to intervene in the dispute.
IPID said that when the colleague arrived at the venue, the accused’s partner got into the deceased officer’s vehicle and the two drove away. It is alleged that the accused then used her service firearm to fire several shots at the departing vehicle.
The fellow JMPD officer sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
“Following the incident, the suspect was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where blood samples were drawn for alcohol testing as part of the investigation,” IPID said in a statement.
Investigators recovered a 9mm service pistol, empty cartridge cases and live ammunition at the scene.
IPID said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.
