A group of ambitious young South Africans has touched down safely in China, marking the start of an exciting international academic journey under the ETDP SETA Chinese STEM Bursary Programme 2026.
The Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP SETA) announced the news on Thursday, confirming that the beneficiaries departed South Africa on 22 April 2026 and arrived in China the following morning.
This initiative forms part of broader efforts to build critical skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
It is implemented in partnership with South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the Chinese Culture and International Education Exchange Centre.
A pre-departure orientation and send-off ceremony was held shortly before the students boarded their flights, preparing them for the cultural and academic transition ahead.

According to ETDP SETA announcements, 45 South African students are participating in the 2026 cohort. These young innovators will pursue undergraduate studies in high-demand areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering Sciences, Biotechnology, and other priority STEM disciplines.
The programme aims to equip participants with world-class knowledge that can be applied back home to support South Africa’s economic growth, innovation, and digital transformation in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
The bursary is fully funded, covering tuition, accommodation, learning materials, and living allowances. It targets unemployed post-matric youth, with a strong focus on previously disadvantaged individuals and those from provinces such as Limpopo, where provincial government officials recently bid farewell to a group of 12 participating students. The initiative aligns with national priorities to address skills shortages and create employment opportunities in the education, training, and development sectors.
ETDP SETA, established in 2000, holds the mandate to enhance the skills profile of the Education, Training and Development (ETD) sector while contributing to job creation, particularly for historically disadvantaged South Africans. This China-bound programme represents a strategic investment in youth development through international partnerships.
For many of the students, the journey symbolises more than academic advancement—it is a bridge between continents and cultures.
The programme builds on existing scholarship opportunities between the two nations, including the broader Chinese Government Scholarship offerings administered through DHET, which prioritise fields like renewable energy, telecommunications, and space science. As the students settle into their new environments, they are expected to immerse themselves not only in rigorous STEM coursework but also in Chinese language and culture, fostering long-term people-to-people relations. Upon completion of their studies, graduates are anticipated to return to South Africa equipped to contribute to key sectors such as education, technology, and innovation-driven industries.
This successful departure and arrival underscore the value of strategic international collaborations in addressing domestic skills gaps. ETDP SETA and its partners continue to call on young South Africans to pursue opportunities in STEM, emphasising that such programmes play a vital role in building a capable, competitive workforce for the future.
The 2026 cohort’s journey has only just begun, but it already represents hope, opportunity, and the power of education to transform lives and nations.
