A police officer stationed in Germiston has been arrested following allegations that he raped a female detainee inside a police station earlier this week.
The arrest was carried out by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on the night of 23 April 2026, after an investigation into the incident.
According to a media statement released on 24 April, the alleged incident took place on 21 April 2026. It is claimed that the officer went to the complainant’s holding cell and raped her while she was in custody. The woman had reportedly been arrested in connection with a domestic violence matter and was alone in the cell at the time.
Authorities say the detainee was earlier called to the reception area at around 18:00 and informed that her case docket could not be located, before being escorted back to her cell.
It is further alleged that between 21:00 and 22:00, the suspect returned to the cell where the incident took place. The complainant reportedly did not immediately report the matter to other officers, fearing they might protect the suspect.
The incident only came to light after the detainee disclosed it to her sister during a visit. The matter was then reported to IPID, which launched an investigation that led to the officer’s arrest after he was identified by the complainant.
The suspect is expected to appear in court on Tuesday (28 April) as investigations continue.
