South African SMMEs to Gain E-Commerce Expertise in China Through W&RSETA

Successful participants could return not only with enhanced technical skills but also valuable networks in one of the worldโ€™s largest e-commerce markets.

The Government has announced an exciting opportunity for young entrepreneurs in the wholesale and retail sector: a fully funded three-month international e-commerce training programme in China, set to run from September to December 2026.

The Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA), in partnership with the Chinese Culture Centre, will sponsor 50 small, medium, and micro-enterprise (SMME) operators to travel to China. Participants will receive hands-on training in critical areas including online store management, digital marketing strategies, and international trade practices.

Beyond classroom learning, the programme offers practical exposure to Chinaโ€™s advanced wholesale and retail e-commerce ecosystem, allowing South African entrepreneurs to study best practices and innovative approaches from one of the worldโ€™s leading digital economies.

This initiative forms part of broader efforts to equip local businesses with skills to compete in the global digital marketplace.

Applications are open to South African youth entrepreneurs who meet strict eligibility criteria. Applicants must be 35 years of age or younger, own a registered company that has been operating for at least one year, and demonstrate a minimum annual turnover of R60,000.

Candidates should also show a clear interest in expanding their businesses through e-commerce.

The closing date for applications is 31 May 2026.

This programme builds on the success of previous W&RSETA collaborations with Chinese partners.

Earlier initiatives have already seen dozens of South African TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) graduates complete similar e-commerce and entrepreneurship training in China, with many returning to apply their newfound skills in the local economy. These exchanges highlight the deepening ties between South Africa and China in skills development and economic cooperation.

In a statement shared on social media, the Government emphasised the programmeโ€™s potential to drive serviced delivery and economic growth by empowering SMMEsโ€”the backbone of the national economyโ€”with international exposure.

As South Africa seeks to accelerate digital transformation and increase participation in global value chains, initiatives like this are expected to help local retailers overcome barriers to online trade, improve competitiveness, and create new export opportunities.

Successful participants could return not only with enhanced technical skills but also valuable networks in one of the worldโ€™s largest e-commerce markets.

With applications closing in just days, eligible young business owners in the wholesale and retail space are encouraged to apply promptly for this rare opportunity to gain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving digital economy.

Interested parties can submit applications via the Chinese Culture Centre by emailing applications@chineseculturecentre.co.za or calling 010 157 2427 for more information.
