Gauteng Traffic Police Chief Inspector Samuel Mashaba has been placed on precautionary suspension with immediate effect pending the outcome of a formal disciplinary process.
The announcement was made by the Gauteng Office of the Premier on 14 June 2026 following testimony given by Mashaba before the Madlanga Commission.
According to the provincial government, admissions made by Mashaba during the commission’s proceedings raised concerns about possible serious breaches of the Public Service Code of Conduct, departmental policies and applicable laws governing public servants.
The allegations relate to the alleged misuse of official powers entrusted to him as a law enforcement officer, the misuse of departmental equipment and state resources, as well as the alleged acceptance of compensation from a member of the public in circumstances that may present a conflict of interest and raise ethical concerns.
The Gauteng Government said it views the allegations in a serious light and remains committed to maintaining high standards of integrity, accountability and professionalism across all government institutions.
As part of the suspension conditions, Mashaba is required to surrender all government-issued tools of trade, including phones, firearms and laptops.
He has also been barred from entering government buildings or interacting with staff members while investigations and disciplinary processes are underway.
The government stated that the suspension is a precautionary measure and forms part of a fair labour process while the matter is being investigated.
“The Gauteng Provincial Government remains committed to building an ethical, capable and professional public service that serves residents with honesty and integrity,” the statement said.
Authorities added that any conduct found to undermine public trust in government institutions will be dealt with decisively and in accordance with the law.
