On Friday evening (May 2), Gauteng Police have confirmed that missing spaza shop owner Mazwi Kubeka is alive and well after he presented himself at the Vosloorus Police Station.
His return follows a week-long protest by residents, political parties and individuals who called for all spaza shops to close in the area.
Minister in the Presidency Ms. Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Premier of Gauteng Mr. Panyaza Lesufi, and Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza addressed a gathering of the community of Vosloorus on the case of the family of 27-year old Kubheka who went for a month missing after an alleged kidnapping and assured of heightened law-enforcement investigation efforts that are now intelligence-led.
Minister appreciated that the community protests on this matter have been peaceful.
During the march, Minister Ntshavheni condemned the intimidation by some foreign nationals on South Africans who are operating spaza shops.
She further urged the Executive Mayor to ensure the Ekurhuleni Metro Police are tasked to enforce municipal by-laws in the operation of spazashops and other micro and informal businesses and discouraged residents from taking the law into their own hands.
Following the engagement, the delegation visited the Kubheka family to provide an update on the strengthened investigation.
