Residents, businesses, and community organisations in the Sedibeng District are being encouraged to share their views on the proposed Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ), following a call for public input by Parks Tau, Minister of Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
The minister published a 30-day public consultation notice on 3 March 2026, inviting written comments from stakeholders and members of the public on the intention to designate the Vaal SEZ in Sedibeng, Gauteng.
The proposal was submitted by the Gauteng Department of Finance and Economic Development to the national department in April 2025. The application is being considered in terms of the Special Economic Zones Act No. 16 of 2014, which governs the establishment of special economic zones aimed at attracting investment and boosting industrial development.
According to the proposal, the SEZ would be developed across land parcels located in all three local municipalities in the Sedibeng District. The combined development area would cover approximately 817 hectares.
The planned zone is expected to focus on several key industries that could drive economic growth in the region. These include renewable energy component manufacturing, a green hydrogen hub and fuel cell production, metallurgical manufacturing focused on green steel, agro-processing including cannabis processing, and general manufacturing.
The project will also include a trade and agricultural zone linked to Heidelberg Airport. This area is expected to support sectors such as electronics, aerospace and aviation services, as well as logistics operations, particularly on the Lesedi land parcel.
Government officials say the proposed SEZ has already attracted interest from potential investors. Some priority investors are reportedly ready to begin construction during the 2026/27 financial year if the project receives final approval.
If implemented, the development is expected to contribute significantly to the local economy. During Phase One, the project could contribute about R4 billion to the regional economy, with the total contribution projected to reach approximately R10.7 billion once the SEZ is fully developed.
The construction phase alone is expected to create about 4,302 direct jobs and an additional 1,305 indirect jobs. Once operational, the SEZ could create a further 5,902 direct employment opportunities in the region.
The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition has also indicated that a public hearing will be held in the Sedibeng District later this month to allow residents to raise questions and share their views on the proposal. The exact venue and date will be announced soon.
Members of the public who wish to make written submissions can send their comments via email to SEZEquiries@thedtic.gov.za. The deadline for submissions is 20 April 2026.
Residents can also access the official government gazette notice about the proposed SEZ through the Government Printing Works website.
Authorities say public participation will play an important role in shaping the future of the proposed development and ensuring that the project benefits communities across Sedibeng.
