Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, has praised South African sprint star Akani Simbine for successfully hosting the inaugural SuperSport Simbine Classic 2026, describing it as a major milestone for athletics in the province.
The event, held on April 28 at Pilditch Stadium in Tshwane, marked the first-ever World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet to be staged in Gauteng and on South African soil.
The competition attracted top-tier talent and placed the province firmly on the global athletics map.
In a statement, Maile said the successful hosting of the event demonstrates Gauteng’s readiness to stage international sporting competitions.
“The inaugural event is an affirmation that Gauteng has the right facilities to host major events and remains the Home of Champions,” he said.
He added that Simbine’s achievement goes beyond sport, highlighting its broader social impact. According to the MEC, the event will serve as inspiration to young people, particularly those from disadvantaged communities, showing that success is possible regardless of one’s background.
“It is a validation that it does not matter where you come from—if you are focused and receive the right support, you can make it,” Maile said.
The Simbine Classic is being recognised not only as a sporting success but also as a strategic initiative that contributes to economic growth and social development in Gauteng.
The provincial government emphasised that hosting international events of this calibre supports key priorities such as youth development, nation-building, and the promotion of social cohesion.
The event also showcased local athletes on an international platform, providing them with valuable exposure and competitive experience.
At the same time, it boosted the province’s reputation as a destination for high-performance sport and large-scale events.
The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation played a central role in supporting and coordinating the event. Through its involvement, government aims to strengthen sports infrastructure, promote excellence, and ensure that more global competitions are hosted locally.
The success of the Simbine Classic is expected to pave the way for future editions, with stakeholders optimistic about its potential to grow into one of Africa’s premier athletics meetings.
As Gauteng continues to position itself as a hub for sport and development, the Simbine Classic stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between government and athletes in driving progress and creating opportunities for the next generation.
