The Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Simelane, joined Panyaza Lesufi and Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements Tasneem Motara to hand over more than 1 000 title deeds and 132 newly built housing units to qualifying beneficiaries in the Lesedi Local Municipality recently.
The programme began at Obed Mthombeni Sports Ground, where beneficiaries received their title deeds under the Department’s Title Deeds Fridays Campaign. The initiative aims to accelerate the registration and issuing of title deeds to rightful beneficiaries of fully subsidised government housing.
Since its launch in 2023, approximately 80 000 title deeds have been handed over nationally. Gauteng has committed to registering 41 214 title deeds between 2024 and 2029 as part of its Medium-Term Development Plan. To date, 15 221 title deeds have already been issued in the province.
The handover of more than 1 000 title deeds in Lesedi confirms legal ownership for beneficiaries, protects them against unlawful evictions and enables families to use their homes as economic assets.
Following the ceremony, the delegation proceeded to the Impumelelo Mega Project (Extension 4), where 132 newly constructed housing units were officially handed over. Five beneficiaries received symbolic keys during the event.
The Impumelelo Mega Project is expected to deliver 6 284 housing units in total, of which 5 520 have already been completed. The development includes major bulk infrastructure investments such as wastewater treatment works, reservoirs, sewer infrastructure and pump stations to ensure the long-term sustainability of the settlement.
At the Obed “Mthombeni” Nkosi Mega Project, government reported continued progress, with thousands of serviced stands delivered, bulk infrastructure upgrades completed and ongoing housing construction contributing to local economic development and job creation.
However, government acknowledged existing service delivery challenges, including bulk electricity constraints affecting Impumelelo Extensions 4 and 5. Authorities confirmed that funding interventions are being pursued to address these bottlenecks.
The joint programme highlighted ongoing collaboration between national, provincial and local government to fast-track the delivery of integrated human settlements and ensure tangible improvements in communities across Gauteng.
