IFP Announces Mlungisi Mabaso As Mayoral Candidate Joburg

Mabaso said his campaign would focus on restoring accountability within the municipality, improving basic services, and rebuilding trust between communities and local government.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has officially launched Mlungisi Mabaso as its mayoral candidate for the City of Johannesburg ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

The announcement marks a significant step for the party as it seeks to strengthen its presence in South Africaโ€™s economic capital and offer residents what it describes as โ€œethical and service-driven leadership.โ€

Speaking during the launch on Saturday (May 16) at Jabulani Technical School in Soweto, party leaders praised Mabaso for his leadership qualities, commitment to community development, and understanding of the challenges facing Johannesburg residents.

The city continues to battle issues including poor service delivery, infrastructure collapse, electricity outages, water shortages, crime, and unemployment.

Mabaso said his campaign would focus on restoring accountability within the municipality, improving basic services, and rebuilding trust between communities and local government.

Currently serving as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Human Settlements in the City, Mabaso has made his mark in the leadership position and wants to prove his worth on the top seat.

โ€œJohannesburg deserves leadership that listens to the people and delivers real solutions,โ€ Mabaso said during his address. โ€œOur priority is to restore dignity to residents through clean governance, reliable services, and economic opportunities.โ€

The launch comes as political parties intensify campaigns ahead of what is expected to be a highly contested municipal election.

Johannesburg remains one of the countryโ€™s most politically important metros, with coalition politics continuing to shape governance in the city.

Political analysts believe the mayoral race could play a major role in determining the future direction of coalition governments in Gauteng. Mabaso now joins a growing list of political figures positioning themselves to lead the metro.
Supporters attending the launch expressed confidence in Mabasoโ€™s ability to unite communities and bring stability to the city administration.

The IFP said it believes Mabasoโ€™s leadership experience and grassroots approach will help the party connect with voters seeking change in Johannesburg.
