Mapepeza Unveils New Logo on World Press Freedom Day

The bold โ€œMโ€ icon, now infused with national colours, symbolises pride, identity, and a connection to the people it serves.

Mapepeza has officially unveiled its new logo in celebration of World Press Freedom Day, marking a significant milestone in the publicationโ€™s evolution and its ongoing mission to serve communities through impactful journalism.

The new visual identity, inspired by the colours of the South African flag, reflects the diversity, resilience, and unity of the communities Mapepeza represents.

More than just a design change, the rebrand signals a renewed commitment to community-driven storytelling and the vital role of local media in strengthening democracy.

Mapepeza was established in 2013 reaching townships in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, now the local independent news media has decided to extend its reach throughout South African communities.

World Press Freedom Day, commemorated annually on May 3, highlights the importance of a free, independent, and pluralistic press. It serves as a reminder of the responsibility carried by media organisations to provide accurate information, hold power to account, and ensure that all voicesโ€”especially those at grassroots levelโ€”are heard.

For Mapepeza, the occasion provided a meaningful platform to introduce a refreshed identity that aligns with its core mission: Engage, Educate, Empower.

โ€œAs we unveil our new logo today, we are not just changing how we lookโ€”we are reaffirming why we exist,โ€ Stephen Seakgwe, the publisher stated. โ€œOur work is rooted in giving a voice to communities, sharing stories that matter, and ensuring that information remains accessible to all.โ€

The bold โ€œMโ€ icon, now infused with national colours, symbolises pride, identity, and a connection to the people it serves. It also reinforces Mapepezaโ€™s role as a platform where local voices can be amplified and community issues brought to the forefront.

In an era where misinformation and declining trust in media remain global challenges, the organisation emphasised the importance of maintaining ethical journalism and community engagement at the heart of its operations.

โ€œPress freedom is not just about journalistsโ€”it is about the publicโ€™s right to know,โ€ the statement continued. โ€œWe believe that informed communities are empowered communities.โ€

As South Africa joins the global community in observing World Press Freedom Day, Mapepezaโ€™s rebrand stands as both a celebration and a commitmentโ€”to continue telling authentic stories, to inform with integrity, and to empower communities through knowledge.

With its new identity now unveiled, Mapepeza looks ahead to the future with a clear vision: to remain a powerful, independent voice for the people, driven by purpose and grounded in South Africaโ€™s multicultural democratic society.
